We don't need no Aviation Growth - Do we?

Aviation - your thoughts are welcome ...

Not the most grammatically correct subject line, but it gets attention.  And it was the topic of debate at the latest Diamond Lunch, hosted by Thomas Eggar LLP.

As I’m sure you are aware, I have strong beliefs that the Aviation Sector is vital for the sub-region and for the Country as a whole.  Latest Government announcements on airport infrastructure alongside the increases in APD are making the UK less and less desirable as a business destination for overseas companies.  There have also been statements from major airlines (such as Qantas) that they will follow expansion plans in other parts of the World.

The discussions focussed on the immediate importance of Gatwick Airport and future plans for Redhill Aerodrome, however it was agreed that a large number of businesses are in the Gatwick Diamond because of the connections that Gatwick brings.

However, a significant number of key business routes have been taken to Heathrow and so there a real issues for a number of our major employers.  One local business generates around 3,000 return trips to Paris, yet there is no flight, while another is spending in excess of £150,000 on travel to Heathrow and Ebbsfleet.

The types of Aircraft also have a real impact on our local economy.  Whilst the mix of aircraft, destinations and operators is welcome, one only needs to understand the catering demands of those aircraft types to see the impact on local businesses.

An easyJet flight will carry around 150 passengers and the catering offer is prepared sandwiches and paninis and pre-packed confectionary and snack items.

The Airbus A380, which can now operate into Gatwick, can have 550 passengers and these will require at least two meals across the four classes of cabin, during their flight.  The catering for that aircraft is therefore reliant on a larger number of jobs at higher skills levels.

So, what is to be done?  We need to help local and national politicians understand that the aviation sector provides both direct jobs and encourages local and investment decisions in the UK.  The imminent Local Enterprise Partnership is focussed on International business and so we must make sure that the sub-regions international connectivity is supported and invested in.

In my view, yes we do need Aviation Growth.

But tell me what you think!  If you don't, I'll only say what I think!
